Job Title: Instrument Laboratory Scientist

Reports To: Instrument Group Lead

Location: Sparks, Nevada

Job Description:
This is an Instrument position in the Laboratory Department responsible for conducting a variety of laboratory procedures using established methods and techniques under direct supervision.

The Instrument Laboratory Scientist (ILS) is responsible for sample preparation, testing, and other laboratory tasks as required. This role includes operating instrumentation and conducting experiments, all while maintaining detailed records of observations, measurements, and results. The ILS is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, disinfection, and upkeep of laboratory workspaces and equipment. This position requires familiarity with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures, following detailed instructions, pre-established guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The ILS operates under direct supervision and works to meet production standards and deadlines in accordance with SOPs, production goals and quality assurance standards.

Salary/Wage Range: $23.00 – $35.00 per hour

Essential Functions:

1. Sample Collection and Preparation

  • Prepare samples for testing following proper laboratory protocols and safety procedures.

2. Conducting Laboratory Tests and Experiments:

  • Perform analytical tests using advanced laboratory equipment and techniques, adhering to SOPs, quality standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Analyze data and interpret results to provide accurate conclusions on environmental samples.

3. Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operate and calibrate laboratory instruments such as FIA Analyzer, Timberline, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and CVAA.
  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and ensure proper functionality by following calibration and maintenance schedules.

4.Data Recording and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate, organized records of experimental data, results, and observations.
  • Ensure the proper documentation of test results in LIMS, and compile data for internal and external review.

5. Quality Assurance and Control:

  • Follow established quality control protocols, ensuring all laboratory work meets regulatory compliance and safety standards.
  • Participate in internal and external audits to maintain laboratory accreditation and certification.

6. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with team members, providing clear communication of findings and results to scientists, technicians, and managers.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects, helping troubleshoot issues and improve laboratory methods.

7. Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols, including the use of protective equipment and proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures and state and federal guidelines and regulations.

8. Laboratory Cleanliness and Organization:

  • Maintain a clean, organized laboratory environment by regularly disinfecting workspaces and properly storing samples and equipment.
  • Dispose of laboratory waste in accordance with hazardous waste protocols and environmental guidelines.

9. Training and Development:

  • Assist in training new laboratory staff and interns on laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and equipment usage.
  • Stay updated on advancements in laboratory technology and methodologies by attending relevant training, workshops, or courses.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand and or sit for 8+ hours per day.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer may be required.
  • Completion of tasks that require sitting, standing, bending, twisting, grasping, walking up and down stairs, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Attendance at meetings, both in-person and virtual, and participation in conference calls.

Work Environment and Schedule:

  • Typical office and lab environment, temperature controlled.
  • Workweek is 5 days/week, 8 hours/day, day shift. Some overtime and weekend availability.

Travel Required:
May require travel throughout the state or country including overnight travel, early mornings, and late nights.

Additional Requirements:
Must be able to pass an employment criminal background check and drug screen.
