In her previous role, she worked at a local institute where she studied and analyzed air quality samples. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a dual minor in biochemistry and chemistry.  When she’s not in the lab, Krysta serves at the cafe in the Grace Church every Sunday, and also coaches varsity volleyball for Truckee High School.

The Chromatography Group at WETLAB has been very busy over the past year.  It has been an exciting time in both areas of production and method development.  They have been providing data to our clients for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), Total Organic Carbon and recently completed method development for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).  The group is currently finishing method development for VOC in soils and Halo acetic Acids (HAA5) and readying them for production in September of 2023.  With these new methods online, we look forward to the opportunity to increase our ability to offer data for environmental solutions.  Providing high level quality data starts at the collection process. In this issue of Lessons from the Lab we would like to share some best practices for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) analysis collection.

The methodology for VOC analysis requires the addition of chemical preservatives prior to sample collection.  WETLAB provides pre-preserved vials to collect the samples for your convenience.  Depending on the matrix and/or compounds of concern, there are specific preservatives required.  For drinking analyzed via EPA 524.2, samples are to be acidified to pH of <2 at the time of collection, but after dichlorination.  WETLAB provides zero headspace vials with 1:1 HCl.  Samples for TTHM (Bromodichloromethane, Bromoform, Chlorodibromomethane, Chloroform (Trichloromethane)) may be preserved with sodium thiosulfate.  For non-drinking water matrices analyzed by EPA 624.1 or 8260, samples are to be acidified to pH of <2 at the time of collection in vials with 1:1 HCl.  Should 2-Chloroethyl vinyl ether, Acrolein or Acrylonitrile be required, a second set of samples must be taken in unpreserved vials.

All samples should be chilled to 4°C ± 2°C when collected and maintained at that temperature until analysis.  During sample collection, the vials should be filled so that no air bubbles are trapped when the bottle is sealed, per SW-846 5021A “Volatile Organic Compounds in Various Matrices Using Equilibrium Headspace Analysis”: Due to differing solubility and diffusion properties of gases in liquid matrices at different temperatures, it is possible for the sample to generate some headspace during storage. The diameter of any bubble caused by degassing upon cooling the sample should not exceed 5 – 6 mm. When a bubble is present, also inspect the cap and septum to ensure that a proper seal was made at the time of sampling. The presence of a macro bubble in a sample vial generally indicates either improper sampling technique or a source of gas evolution within the sample. The latter case is usually accompanied by a buildup of pressure within the vial, (e.g. carbonate-containing samples preserved with acid). Studies conducted by the USEPA (EMSL-Ci, unpublished data) indicate that “pea-sized” bubbles (i.e. bubbles not exceeding 1/4 inch or 6 mm in diameter) did not adversely affect volatile data. These bubbles were generally encountered in wastewater samples, which are more susceptible to variations in gas solubility, than groundwater samples.

Another good practice for sample collection is to completely fill out a chain of custody form and sample bottles, with system name and ID, sample point ID, sample collection date and time, and sample matrix.

If you have questions regarding sample collection procedures, please feel free to contact WETLAB Client Services at 775-355-0202.

New Certification

We are excited to announce that our lab has received two new certifications! We received the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) by EPA 8260, issued by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP). This certification gives us the ability to determine volatile organic compounds in a variety of solid waste matrices. We also will receive our Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) by EPA 552, issued by NDEP, in September! This provides us with the capability to identify haloacetic acids, which constitute a group of chemicals generated in conjunction with other disinfection byproducts. These byproducts emerge as a result of the reaction between chlorine, as well as other disinfectants used to control microbial impurities in drinking water, with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter within the water.

Boys and Girls Club Field Trip

During their “Lead Through Nature Camp Week’, kids ages 9-12 from the Boys and Girls Club of Nevada were able to enjoy a day at the Laboratory where they were able to learn about all things environmental testing related. We always aim to help inspire kids to learn more about the world around them and how to make a positive impact on it.

The Boys and Girls Club of Nevada enjoyed a day at the Laboratory where they were able to tour the lab during their “Lead Through Nature Camp Week’. The laboratory tour, led by our amazing team, provided an insightful glimpse into the world of scientific research and its impact on the environment.

The highlight of the day was the hands-on experience that the children enjoyed. Throughout the day, the children were able to enjoy various interactive activities and engaging lessons.

By nurturing their understanding of the environment, we hope that these children will go on to become scientists and researchers. We had so much fun teaching the kids about the world around us!

Gigi is one of our newest additions to the team, joining us as a laboratory manager. Gigi has 5 years of experience in her field, most recently working as a hazardous waste technician where she learned to segregate hazardous materials, and perform hazardous categorization tests to identify materials for proper labeling and disposal. In October 2021, she was awarded with a “Best of the Best” Safety Award in Waste Management. As the laboratory manager at the WETLAB Las Vegas branch, Gigi’s responsibilities include overseeing daily laboratory operations, as well as managing laboratory functions and staff. She ensures that all safety protocols are followed, while maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.

Welcome Gigi! We are thrilled to have you as a part of the team!

There are various causes of water pollution. A pollutant is any substance that is introduced to the environment and increases the natural background of a material.  The two main categories of pollution are point source and nonpoint source.  Point source pollution is a pollutant that is introduced from a single, specific source such as a discharge pipe from a sewage plant.  A pollutant that is caused and/or introduced from multiple sources is called a nonpoint source pollution.

During spring and early summer, nonpoint (NPS) source pollution is a major consideration in our region.  The EPA defines NPS pollution as result from land runoff, precipitation, atmospheric deposition, drainage, seepage or hydrological modification. They explain that NPS is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground.  As runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters and ground waters.  After our most recent winter that brought a large amount of snowfall to the region, snowmelt monitoring will be an important tool to understand potential NPS.  Analysis typically required for nonpoint source management plans include nutrients (including total phosphorus and total nitrogen), trace metals, turbidity, suspended solids, ortho phosphorus, anions, pH, color, fecal coliform, Escherichia Coli (e. Coli) and alkalinity.  This diverse contaminant list requires multiple bottles, preservatives and hold times.  Because of this, it is important to identify and understand your analytical requirements prior to ordering bottles and going into the field for sample collection.

At WETLAB, our purpose is to provide data for environmental solutions.  Our Project Management team is available to assist with all your pre-project planning.  To schedule your pre-project meeting, please call 775-355-0202.

The Environmental Club’s Trip to Grimes Point

The Environmental Club at WETLAB occasionally plans events outside of our monthly meetings. One of the events we love to do is hiking trips. Our latest trip to Grimes Point was incredibly special and we all had an amazing time. The cave is closed to the public, except for the free tours they do twice a month. We had around 20 employees attend this event!

Our day started off with some bagels, muffins, and coffee from My Favorite Muffin in Midtown. After a delicious breakfast, we carpooled from WETLAB to Churchill County Museum in Fallon. We were able to watch a short film at the museum, where we learned about the cave site before caravanning to the site and taking a guided tour organized by the museum.  Once we arrived at the site, we began the guided hike to the cave while the guide pointed out and explained the history of the petroglyphs and rock formations along the trail to the cave. We had the opportunity to learn some interesting facts about the site! Did you know the cave itself was formed around 21,000 years ago by the waves of rising Pleistocene Lake Lahontan? Grimes Point is one of the oldest known petroglyph sites in Nevada. It contains over 150 basalt boulders bearing pecked designs, some of which are at least 8,000 years old!

Once the tour was concluded, our team had the option to go back to Reno/Sparks or go hiking to see petroglyphs and/or go rock hounding before returning to WETLAB.

We look forward to experiencing the incredible hikes that northern Nevada has to offer us!

As a certified environmental testing laboratory, specializing in organic and inorganic testing, our team at WETLAB is committed to providing you with high quality data. Our goal, as always, is to meet local, state, and federal regulations for environmental testing while providing accurate and reliable data.

That’s why our team wants to make sure you know how to successfully collect a sample. So how do you get started?

One of the most important things you should understand is that a test result is only as good as the sampling and handling that was performed before analysis.

The first step of successful sampling is to prepare a sampling and analysis plan.  The plan should identify and describe sampling locations, sample IDs, sample matrix, constituents to be analyzed at each sample point, what types of collection bottle and preservatives are necessary for analysis at each sample point and any quality control requirements.  Once your plan is complete, you may order the appropriate bottle kit from the laboratory.  During this time, you should verify bottles, preservatives and sampling procedures with your laboratory. Now in the field, ensure the correct bottles and preservatives are used for collection at each sample point described in your sampling and analysis plan.

The containers will be specific to the sample matrix (water, soil, sludge, or other) and the testing requirements outlined in your plan. Sample containers vary in color, material, and size including glass or plastic, clear or opaque.

When collecting the sample, use caution to avoid contamination.  Place the lid with the top side down, so as not to contaminate the side that may be in contact with the sample, protect collection bottles from wind, rain, snow, and other elements that can introduce contamination or change the makeup of the sample. Make sure to not rinse out the bottle, as there could be a preservative in it. Fill the bottle with the amount listed on the instructions to avoid removal of any preservative present in the bottle.  Sample preservatives are used to retard chemical and biological reactions, reduce the volatility of compounds and the hydrolysis of compounds and complexes.  There are multiple preservation methods that a sample may be subject to including refrigeration or temperature control, pH control, chemical additions, UV reduction and filtration.

Once you’ve collected your sample, the hold time (allowed time from sample collection until analysis) begins. Therefore, it is important to know how long it will take for a sample to be received by the laboratory since tests have varying hold times.  A hold time may be measured in minutes, hours, days, or months. If analysis is performed past the hold time, it doesn’t necessarily negate the accuracy of the sample results, but the data will be flagged with a qualifier to represent the failed method criteria.   It’s important to understand the preservation and hold time criteria for all required analysis prior to collection in the field.

WETLAB is able to help alleviate some of the logistics involved in the process– we offer courier pick up or drop off at all three of our locations. If you need a sample picked up or delivered, please call us to coordinate. We can also assist with sample shipping. Our team maintains a wide network to ensure the sampling process is as seamless as possible and we are able to accommodate sampling on weekend days by appointment.

If you are preparing to take a sample, take the time to properly plan and schedule an order with us. Feel free to reach out to our lab to get the process started. There are plenty of benefits to partnering with us early in process, in order to:

  • Request the appropriate bottle kit
  • Ensure the correct sampling bottles and preservatives are being used
  • Ensure the samples are taken at the right time of the year
  • Ensure the correct methods are used for the sample matrix
  • Verify your samples are collected as intended by your permit and sampling and analysis plan

If you have any questions regarding sample integrity, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team.
