In Our WETLAB World
Introducing Our New Logo
Take a look at our new logo! We are excited to introduce this fresh look as we celebrate our 21st year in business.
Happy Birthday WETLAB!
This year for WETLAB’s birthday, we decided to give each of our employee groups $250 to donate to a non-profit of their choice. Giving back to our community is incredibly important to WETLAB, and we wanted to honor our history of charity by celebrating this on a very special day. Below is our list of recipients!
Our New Equipment is Here
It is here! Take a sneak peek at our new metals equipment. We have 2 new units – iCAP RQ iMR Quadrupole ICP-MS Spectrometer w/ 1 QCell MFC. This innovative single quadrupole (SQ) ICP-MS is the ideal trace elemental analyzer for a wide range of sample types and industries; from 24/7 routine analysis to advanced applications in research. A Day at Reno Ice
To show our appreciation to our clients and our employees, we hosted a night of fun ice skating at the Reno Ice rink. Check out the photos!
The Environmental Club’s Trip to Grimes Point
The Environmental Club at WETLAB occasionally plans events outside of our monthly meetings. One of the events we love to do is hiking trips. Our latest trip to Grimes Point was incredibly special and we all had an amazing time. The cave is closed to the public, except for the free tours they do twice a month. We had around 20 employees attend this event!
Our day started off with some bagels, muffins, and coffee from My Favorite Muffin in Midtown. After a delicious breakfast, we carpooled from WETLAB to Churchill County Museum in Fallon. We were able to watch a short film at the museum, where we learned about the cave site before caravanning to the site and taking a guided tour organized by the museum. Once we arrived at the site, we began the guided hike to the cave while the guide pointed out and explained the history of the petroglyphs and rock formations along the trail to the cave. We had the opportunity to learn some interesting facts about the site! Did you know the cave itself was formed around 21,000 years ago by the waves of rising Pleistocene Lake Lahontan? Grimes Point is one of the oldest known petroglyph sites in Nevada. It contains over 150 basalt boulders bearing pecked designs, some of which are at least 8,000 years old!
Once the tour was concluded, our team had the option to go back to Reno/Sparks or go hiking to see petroglyphs and/or go rock hounding before returning to WETLAB.
We look forward to experiencing the incredible hikes that northern Nevada has to offer us!
A Brief Recap: Employee Training
Our WETLAB managers are participating in a Fundamentals and Advanced Skills seminar, hosted by Nevada Association of Employers (NAE) in May and July. These training sessions seek to aid supervisors with better understanding of regulatory laws, how to troubleshoot uncomfortable situations, strengthen their leadership skills, and so much more! We can’t wait to see what they learn! Learn more here: https://www.nevadaemployers.org/supervisor-training/
Dalton Millar, Information Systems Specialist, received his Microsoft certification in Azure Fundamentals, a foundational certification for understanding and demonstrating basic competence in working with the core Azure stack. The actual certificate, AZ-900, validates foundational knowledge of cloud services and how those services work together as part of the Microsoft Azure platform. Congratulations Dalton!
BBQ’s Are Back
WETLAB’s Earth Day celebrations were a total blast, with an amazing employee BBQ as the main event! Employees enjoyed the opportunity to socialize and learn more about how they can make a positive impact on the environment both at work and in their personal lives. It was a great kick off to BBQ season and we are looking forward to more this summer.
In Our Industry
Attending the SME Conference
This year’s SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration) was held in Denver, Colorado from February 26th through March 1st. Mckenna Oh and Garry Gray had the pleasure of representing WETLAB for the 125th edition of this outstanding event. As the mining industry steps into the spotlight, supplying the minerals critical to powering a green economy, the focus on ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance), innovation and health & safety is more important than ever. The annual SME conference is a way to immerse oneself in the new mine surface strategies, advances in A.I. and important initiatives for a sustainable future within the mining industry. SME, with its annual conference, prides itself on furthering professional development beyond the expected insights vital to the evolution of mining.
They were told that their raffle item – Fireside Bourbon from Mile High Spirits – is a favorite among Denver locals. The lucky winner of the WETLAB raffle prize was Aman Soni, a Geochemical Engineer from Freeport-McMoRan in Arizona. Just to prove they were at the right conference, Mckenna & Garry had to pose by the giant SME display!
Representing WETLAB at the NvRWA Expo
The 2023 NvRWA (Nevada Rural Water Association) Annual Training, Technical Conference & Expo was held at the Sparks Nugget in March. The 2023 conference marked the 31st NRWA event and was truly memorable, thanks to the increased number of vendors and attendees present. Garry Gray was honored to once again represent WETLAB at this popular conference.
WETLAB’s team enjoyed the company of the many attendees, comprised of water & wastewater professionals, environmental consultants, engineers and regulators. The overriding theme this year was the notion of keeping drinking water and the environment safe for all Nevadans. Among the more popular conference events was the ‘Best Tasting Water Contest’. It was hotly contested by the various municipalities involved and WETLAB had the distinction of providing all the 1 liter amber bottles for the contest, which we’re certain contributed to the competing water providers’ water tasting great! Many thanks to the WETLAB Sample Control Team for all their support.
